Morphing Video of An Actual Patient

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

I’ve been given permission by one of my patients who came for breast augmentation in Santa Barbara to post a video of the transition between her pre-operative breast form and her post-operative breast form. This video is on our YouTube Channel, “videoplasticsurgergery” with several others.

Who does your Botox®?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Today I had a call from the concierge at the Four Seasons Resort here in Santa Barbara.  One of their guests wanted a Botox® treatment and was curious if we were available today, Sunday.  I spoke with the concierge and explained that I would of course love to provide services to their guests.  This woman decided that she wanted to have her injection later in the week, and so I’ll look forward to seeing her then.  It did get me thinking, however, about who, what, and where patients are getting their Botox® done. Post-operative care- don’t skimp on your comfort or safety!

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Yesterday I did another rhinoplasty- this patient is from Scandinavia and came to see me in Santa Barbara for her plastic surgery. At her preoperative consultation, I asked her who she was planning on having help her following surgery, and how she was going to get back to her hotel. She had planned to take a taxi to and from the surgery, and was going to stay alone overnight until she could come back and see me the following day.
Well, this was not going to fly with me. (more…)

Plastic Surgery in Santa Barbara- what’s in a name?

Plastic surgery in Santa Barbara- what’s in a name?

The term plastic surgeon is getting more confusing to understand, every day.  Cosmetic surgery, cosmetic medicine, plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, facial plastic surgery- many patients, and unfortunately some physicians, are using these terms interchangeably.

This is largely because any physician with a medical license can call themselves anything they want.  A general surgeon can advertise themselves as a plastic surgeon.  So can a physician who is trained in obstetrics and gynecology.  A family medicine physician, who has a very limited training or experience in invasive medicine, nonetheless surgery, can even advertise under a variety of self-deemed terms from cosmetic surgeon to plastic surgeon.  And in fact, it’s hard to blame them. Deciding on any plastic surgery, especially breast augmentation, is a very personal decision and one not to be made casually or lightly.  Finding the right operation, and having it performed by the right surgeon, is key to increasing your likelihood of a long lasting and great result.  We have seen so many patients over the years, and the vast majorities have come to our office for plastic surgery in Santa Barbara for great reasons.  Here are 5 common reasons we perform breast implant surgery in Santa Barbara: (more…)

BREAST RECONSTRUCTION- PRE-OPERATIVE ASSESSMENT AND EDUCATION

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

The following is a reproduction of one of my transcripts that was published in Breast Disease in 2002. It focuses on discussion of breast reconstructive surgery and I though it an appropriate addition to the BLOG of our website.

BREAST RECONSTRUCTION- PRE-OPERATIVE ASSESSMENT AND EDUCATION

- by Adam Lowenstein, MD, FACS

Breast reconstruction can be one of the most rewarding aspects of health care, not only for the patient, but for the surgeon as well. The diagnosis of breast cancer and its associated anxiety can be devastating to anyone. (more…)

Body Contouring in Santa Barbara- Abdominoplasty vs. Liposuction

Friday, August 1st, 2008

When is Liposuction the right answer?

Yesterday I did a liposuction operation on a young woman here at my Plastic Surgery Center in Santa Barbara.  She was in her mid 30’s, and she’s going to get a great result because she was an excellent candidate for the operation.  A lot of my patients come to the office looking for a change in their body form, often in the abdominal region.  Some patients are excellent candidates for the liposuction procedure, and some are better off with actual excisional body contouring plastic surgery.  Often I spend a good deal of time explaining the difference.

Liposuction is a process where extra fat is removed- literally “sucked” out of the areas where it has inappropriately accumulated- without significant manipulation of the overlying skin. (more…)

Saline Breast Implants vs. Silicone Breast Implants for Breast Augmentation Santa Barbara

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

As we begin to utilize our new Blog on our website at the Montecito Center for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Santa Barbara, I want to touch on a question that I frequently get asked- “Should I use saline breast implants or silicone breast implants for my breast augmentation?” While this is somewhat of an involved question and many issues factor into it, I thought I would briefly discuss a few of the things I think about when discussing this issue with patients before having plastic surgery in Santa Barbara.

The first thing I think about in evaluating you is your age. The FDA has approved silicone breast implants only for those women 22 years of age and older. While this seems somewhat arbitrary, this means that there needs to be a specific reason to use silicone in a woman who is younger than 22 years of age, such as failure of a previous implant or some type of reconstruction.

Secondly, when you come to be evaluated for breast implants in Santa Barbara, I assess the amount of breast tissue that you already have. (more…)
