In about 2 weeks I’m going to attend a course which will allow me to use a new soft tissue filler made by Johnson and Johnson- it is a cross-linked collagen product for moderate to deep wrinkles and folds and is supposed to last AT LEAST 6 months. Only a plastic surgeon who has attended this seminar will be able to get and inject the Evolence product, so it is not something that will be easy to find in the run of the mill medical spa. I don’t anticipate that this will replace the other plastic surgery injectables that I use such as Radiesse and Juviderm and Resylane, but I do think for certain situations, this new product should be pretty fantastic. Give us a call or send us an email to schedule an appointment if you think this type of plastic surgery injectable soft tissue filler is something you might like to have.
I was looking through a newspaper this week and came across an ad for a “cosmetic surgeon” and his face lift using a laser, with before and after photos. The photos were interesting- a rather dramatic result was shown, with the caption “before face lift” and “after face lift”. Examining the photos a bit more carefully, I noticed a couple of classic tricks that advertisers can use… Firstly, in the “after” photos, the woman was wearing a significant amount of makeup- she was “dolled up” as my grandmother used to say. This video runs through photos pretty fast, but is entertaining nonetheless. Use the “pause” button to examine closer! Some of it is pretty scary… ‘Extreme LA Women’ - Dillon
Today I had a call from the concierge at the Four Seasons Resort here in Santa Barbara. One of their guests wanted a Botox® treatment and was curious if we were available today, Sunday. I spoke with the concierge and explained that I would of course love to provide services to their guests. This woman decided that she wanted to have her injection later in the week, and so I’ll look forward to seeing her then. It did get me thinking, however, about who, what, and where patients are getting their Botox® done. Yesterday I did another rhinoplasty- this patient is from Scandinavia and came to see me in Santa Barbara for her plastic surgery. At her preoperative consultation, I asked her who she was planning on having help her following surgery, and how she was going to get back to her hotel. She had planned to take a taxi to and from the surgery, and was going to stay alone overnight until she could come back and see me the following day.
Well, this was not going to fly with me. (more…)
Plastic surgery in Santa Barbara- what’s in a name?
The term plastic surgeon is getting more confusing to understand, every day. Cosmetic surgery, cosmetic medicine, plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, facial plastic surgery- many patients, and unfortunately some physicians, are using these terms interchangeably.
This is largely because any physician with a medical license can call themselves anything they want. A general surgeon can advertise themselves as a plastic surgeon. So can a physician who is trained in obstetrics and gynecology. A family medicine physician, who has a very limited training or experience in invasive medicine, nonetheless surgery, can even advertise under a variety of self-deemed terms from cosmetic surgeon to plastic surgeon. And in fact, it’s hard to blame them. The following is a reproduction of one of my transcripts that was published in Breast Disease in 2002. It focuses on discussion of breast reconstructive surgery and I though it an appropriate addition to the BLOG of our website.
BREAST RECONSTRUCTION- PRE-OPERATIVE ASSESSMENT AND EDUCATION
- by Adam Lowenstein, MD, FACS
Breast reconstruction can be one of the most rewarding aspects of health care, not only for the patient, but for the surgeon as well. The diagnosis of breast cancer and its associated anxiety can be devastating to anyone. (more…)
Yesterday I did a liposuction operation on a young woman here at my Plastic Surgery Center in Santa Barbara. She was in her mid 30’s, and she’s going to get a great result because she was an excellent candidate for the operation. A lot of my patients come to the office looking for a change in their body form, often in the abdominal region. Some patients are excellent candidates for the liposuction procedure, and some are better off with actual excisional body contouring plastic surgery. Often I spend a good deal of time explaining the difference.
Liposuction is a process where extra fat is removed- literally “sucked” out of the areas where it has inappropriately accumulated- without significant manipulation of the overlying skin. (more…)
