Juvederm | Restylane | Hyaluronic Acids

Signs of aging start to appear as early as our 20s as our skin gradually loses its fullness and smooth texture. The natural aging process, genetics, stress, sunshine and other environmental factors all take a toll, leaving lines, sagging skin and sunken areas along the face.

Dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane offer a quick, non-surgical approach to enhancing your skin’s appearance and restoring a youthful look. Also known as soft-tissue fillers and injectables, dermal fillers replace what the aging process has taken away, creating a full, smooth and fresh appearance.

If you’ve been considering facial augmentation but aren’t sure which method will work best for you, the staff at Montecito Plastic Surgery in Santa Barbara can help. Dr. Lowenstein’s expert nurse injector Stephanie can work with you to determine which dermal filler options will produce the results you want.

Our Aging Skin

The loss of volume and elasticity that occurs through the years results from changes in the skin’s chemical makeup. One compound in particular plays a significant role in the visible lines, folds and wrinkles left behind—hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a key molecule responsible for binding and retaining water molecules, which helps maintain skin moisture. The gradual loss of hyaluronic acid in the skin mirrors the gradual loss of collagen and elastin, and together, these changes lead to dehydration, loss of fullness and loss of elasticity.

One of the main active ingredients in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid. The addition of this vital substance in dermal fillers helps fill in lines and sunken areas by binding with nearby water molecules and supports the skin’s natural collagen-producing process.

Juvederm and Restylane dermal fillers have a gel-like consistency designed to fill and smooth the areas of the face most affected by aging. Dermal fillers have many benefits. Some of them include:

  • Smooth away creases around the nose and mouth
  • Add volume and definition to the lips
  • Restore plumpness to the cheeks
  • Erase frown lines
  • Smooth out the lines between the mouth and chin

Same-Day Procedure

Dermal fillers at Montecito Plastic Surgery are performed in-office and take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour to complete depending on the number of facial areas treated.

The procedure starts with an examination of the areas of your face being treated. Stephanie will then mark or map out the sites for the dermal filler injection. From there, she will use an antibacterial solution to clean the identified areas.

Ice packs, cold air and anesthetic ointments may be used to reduce pain around the injection sites. These techniques make for a nearly painless procedure. Some tenderness and mild swelling may develop over the next day or two, but not to the extent where pain medications are needed.

Ensuring your privacy and overall comfort remains a top priority at Montecito Plastic Surgery. This level of convenience allows you to schedule an appointment that fits into your daily routine.

Immediate Results

You will see immediate results once the procedure is done. Hollow or sunken areas appear fuller instantly, while folds and fine lines are smoothed out.

If you have a special event coming up in the near future, we can help you time your appointment so that you look your best when the occasion arrives. As far as facial augmentation goes, this kind of flexibility and convenience is hard to come by with surgery-based procedures.

The effects of the procedure will continue to enhance your appearance as your skin’s natural collagen production receives a boost. This means your face will not only appear fuller in the short term, but you also may notice longer-lasting improvements from the new collagen.

Can dermal fillers be combined with other treatments?

Dermal fillers can produce remarkable plumping and smoothing effects; however, they cannot offer these same effects to the wrinkles around the eyes and forehead. To treat other skin concerns, such as fine lines and wrinkles in the upper face, you may want to consider additional enhancements to achieve your desired results.

Montecito Plastic Surgery offers other non-surgical options to smooth out these areas. Botox injections can be combined with dermal fillers to enhance all areas of the face. Botox and treatments like it follow a procedure similar to dermal fillers, making it easy to perform both treatments during the same office visit.

Other techniques – both surgical and non-surgical – can also be combined with dermal fillers, offering a range of options from which to choose. During your consultation at Montecito Plastic Surgery, one of our expert staff will give you a customized treatment plan according to your aesthetic goals.

Are dermal filler injections painful?

Dermal filler injections are administered slightly deeper than Botox injections. A topical numbing cream is applied before the treatment to offset any discomfort. The numbing cream needs time to take effect fully, so plan to allow for that when you make your appointment.

What are the potential side effects of dermal fillers?

At Montecito Plastic Surgery, we offer the dermal filler lines of Juvéderm and Restylane. These lines have various fillers that are formulated to address different areas of the mid and lower face. These fillers are all made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the human body responsible for hydrating, plumping and firming the skin.

Restylane and Juvéderm are very well tolerated, and reactions are rare. The only typical side effects are slight redness and swelling at the injection sites. This wears off in a few hours in most cases. Occasionally a lump may form at the injection site, but this problem can be corrected by the injection of an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which immediately dissolves the hyaluronic acid and removes the bump.

How does Montecito Plastic Surgery deliver the results I want?

Stephanie will conduct a thorough assessment and treatment planning process to determine the aesthetic results you want and decide what procedures will help you meet your goals. Since each person’s condition and physiological makeup is different, these steps help ensure your safety as well as the overall effectiveness of the procedure.

Feelings of anxiety are not uncommon when considering facial augmentation, so feel free to ask questions and express any concerns during your consultation.

How long do dermal filler results last?

The gel material that makes up dermal fillers breaks down over time, so the results are not permanent. The natural ingredients in fillers can produce positive results for three to 18 months and sometimes longer, depending on how well your skin responds to the treatment.

To maintain lasting results, periodic follow-up dermal filler injections are needed. There are, however, steps you can take to protect your skin and prolong the results. Using sunscreen on a daily basis and keeping your body hydrated can go a long way towards promoting lasting dermal filler results.

Your injector’s expertise also has a considerable bearing on the result. At Montecito Plastic Surgery, you’re in an expert’s hands and can achieve beautiful, natural-looking results you will love for months to come.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t receive dermal filler injections?

One of the main reasons a person shouldn’t receive dermal fillers would be for wrinkles occurring on the upper third of the face—crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead lines. Dermal fillers do not work in these areas, as the wrinkles form due to muscle contractions under the skin. In these cases, Botox is needed to erase the lines.

The Restylane and Juvéderm filler families are the most popular dermal fillers in the world. They have been used around the globe for millions of patients, and they have loyal followings. That’s because they deliver effective, predictable, safe results.

Both of these filler lines are categorized as natural fillers because they are made from hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the human body. These fillers erase lines and wrinkles, return volume to sunken cheeks and areas around the mouth, and can even add shape and fullness to thin lips. They do so with minimal pain and are completely noninvasive.

All you have to lose is your wrinkles and areas of volume loss.
