The results of the CoolSculpting procedure are achieved using the advanced Cryolipolysis™ technology, which cools the targeted tissue to break down the fat cells for easy removal, without any harm to the surrounding tissue. Fat cells have been proven to be more vulnerable to cold than the surrounding tissue. This stimulates a natural fat removal process that continues for several months after the procedure. The CoolSculpting fat reduction procedure is currently approved for use in the United States, Canada, Europe and other international markets. The system has been approved by the FDA as an effective device for reducing fat in the areas of the flanks, or love handles, as well as the abdomen and thighs. It has additionally been found to be helpful in re-contouring other areas such as the back near the bra strap. CoolSculpting has been safely used across the world for many years. While many other companies (Venusfreeze, SculpSure, Ultrashape, and so many others) have raced to try to try to match the effectiveness of CoolSculpting technology, CoolSculpting remains the gold standard treatment to which all others are compared. The CoolSculpting expertise and experience at Montecito Plastic Surgery in Santa Barbara remains unmatched in the region.

FAQs: CoolSculpting

Importantly, Dr. Lowenstein has never been taken up on this offer which speaks to the outstanding satisfaction of his patients after their CoolSculpting procedure.

  • Why is CoolSculpting called the GOLD STANDARD?

CoolSculpting has been around for many years- Dr. Lowenstein got this technology back in 2011 and we have been treating patients with extraordinary success ever since. With the success of CoolSculpting you would expect many other companies to try to mimmic their treatments, and excitement about several of these other technologies has come and go. Radiofrequency technologies such as Vanquish, Zerona, TruSclupt, and Venus Freeze have all been transiently popular over the last few years. Similarly, lasers that claim to reduce fat such as SculpSure are also trying to compete with CoolSculpting though their claims of improvement are less than we typically see in our body contouring center with tried and true CoolSculpting. Why is everyone trying to compare themselves to CoolSculpting? Because it is the GOLD STANDARD for non-invasive fat removal that works so well and is backed by years of success!

  • Who are candidates for CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is considered safe and effective for most patients improvement of their thighs, abdomen, love handles and back. Since CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution, patients should be generally in the range of an appropriate weight for their height. Usual candidates for CoolSculpting have one or more areas of stubborn fat that does not respond to diet or exercise. Appropriate patients are often active men and women who wish to see some improvement difficult to manage areas. Many CoolSculpting patients have previously entertained liposuction but found that liposuction was too invasive or associated with too much recovery time. Because CoolSculpting has no need for compression garments or time away from work or the gym, it is an ideal alternative for the Santa Barbara active lifestyle.

  • What are the benefits of CoolSculpting?

As a completely non-invasive procedure, CoolSculpting benefits are clear:

    • No downtime
    • No need for anesthesia
    • Minimal discomfort
    • No incisions
    • Results with a single treatment

Patients are able to return to work and resume other regular activities the very same day. There are usually no restrictions on returning to your work-out or athletic activity, be it yoga, running, weight lifting, cycling, swimming, or surfing.

  • What can I expect during the procedure?

The CoolSculpting procedure involves the use of an applicator that cools the fat cells in the targeted area of your body for a simple, natural fat removal process. A gel pad is applied to the area to be treated, and then an applicator cup is attached to deliver a gentle vacuum pressure that draws tissue between the cooling panels. Treatment usually lasts one hour and is relatively pain free.

  • Where does the fat go? How long to the results last?

Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), they die. Over time, the body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good.

  • Is Coolsculpting Safe?

The CoolSculpting procedure is FDA-cleared for non-surgical fat reduction on the flank (love handles), abdomen, and thigh. With over one million CoolSculpting procedures performed, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for non-surgical fat reduction.

  • How does CoolSculpting work?

The treated fat cells are removed though natural metabolic processes within the body, similar to the way fat from food is removed. This allows for a gradual reduction in fat from targeted areas to create a slimmer, more defined appearance. Because the freezing process triggers a cellular response and no surgery or incision is required, there are no restrictions on activity following CoolSculpting.

  • What does it feel like?

As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold. This soon dissipates. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their treatment.

  • What is Z wave?

Z wave is an apparatus that some spas use to try and “up-sell” with CoolSculpting instead of manual massage after treatment. Studies have shown an increase in the effectiveness of CoolSculpting of more than 60% with manual massage, while the Z Wave machine is supposed to increase the effect of CoolSculpting by only 10% to 40%. The CoolSculpting company does not endorse Z Wave for many reasons, but primarily because their extensive studies show that vigorous manual massage, as is done at our center, is the preferred standard of treatment. Why use Z Wave to limit your CoolSculpting improvement? We are not interested in up-selling our patients, just getting great results, and our extensive experience as a CoolSculpting Center shows exactly that.

  • What happens if I gain weight down the road?

Many people, after seeing the results from their CoolSculpting procedure, take even better care of themselves. However, if you do gain weight, you may gain it evenly all over your body, not just in the treated areas.

  • Do I need to take special supplements or follow a strict diet and exercise program?

No supplements or pills are required and you do not have to adopt new diet and exercise habits. Many patients feel more motivated to take care of themselves after their CoolSculpting treatment. It is as if they get a second lease on their body and want to start anew again by taking even better care of themselves.

  • Can I return to normal activity after my treatment?

Yes, you can. The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Often times, patients return to work after their CoolSculpting session is over.

  • When will I see results?

You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment.

  • Are there any side effects?

During the procedure you may experience deep pulling, tugging, pinching, numbness or discomfort. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and pain. Rare side effects may also occur. The CoolSculpting procedure is not for everyone. You should not have the CoolSculpting procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting procedure is not a treatment for obesity. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you.

  • What results can I expect with CoolSculpting?

The results of the CoolSculpting procedure are usually visible two to three months after treatment. Significant results without the down-time of surgery is what sets this technology apart.

  • What are the risks of CoolSculpting?

Because of its noninvasive nature, CoolSculpting has considerably fewer risks than other fat reduction procedures. CoolSculpting is considered safe for most patients, although there are certain risks associated with any kind of treatment. Following CoolSculpting, most patients report minimal discomfort. Some bruising can occur, and the feeling of numbness and “pins-and-needles” has been experienced by some patients. These feelings resolve in a matter of days, with no medium or long-term changes to be expected. In comparison, liposuction patients often experience numbness and “burning” sensations that similarly resolve, though often over a longer period of time. Less than 10% of patients complain of significant discomfort after CoolScultping.

  • How much does CoolSculpting cost?

More information about the costs of CoolSculpting for our Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, Santa Maria, and regional patients can be found here.

  • What about skin tightening?

With the experienced application of CoolSculpting by our expert staff, we have found that most patients do not need further treatment for sagging or loose skin. Secondary procedures for cellulite do not seem to be necessary. After thousands of CoolSculpting applications, we have only required skin tightening in less than 5 cases. Successful treatment of the skin with Ultherapy in these few cases worked like magic. Ask Dr. Lowenstein if you really need more skin tightening than CoolSculpting- in most cases he would rather have you save your money.

  • What are the keys to CoolSculpting technique?

Dr. Lowenstein has been performing CoolSculpting for many years and our practice is one of the more experienced CoolSculpting centers in the country. In fact, Dr. Lowenstein has been a CoolSculpting speaker at national meetings. Our experience with both applicator placement and massage remains key to our success and extremely high patient satisfaction. Applicator placement is extremely important and must involve optimal patient position. Patients are placed in an ideal position to allow unfettered application of the CoolSculpting apparatus in just the right spot. For example, we have found that DualSculpting (using two machines simultaneously) provided less optimal results, and therefore we abandoned the DualSculpting technique. We found it nearly impossible to place two applicators on the body without at least one of them becoming poorly positioned from pressure by the bed or chair that the patient was on. Because results are key to Dr. Lowenstein’s success, we choose to use one applicator at a time to maximize patient outcome. Vigorous manual massage following CoolSculpting treatment is a second key to CoolSculpting outcome. The return of warmth to the tissue following the CoolSculpting freeze should be robust. The rapid change in temperature has been shown to be major factor in generation of free radicals which are key in destruction of the fat cells. Warm hands vigorously massaging the frozen tissue after treatment has allowed optimization of our CoolSculpting results, and our experienced staff understands how to maximize the immediate post-procedure period for our patients.
