Because the treatment of excess fat on the body is one of the most requested plastic surgery procedures in Santa Barbara, Dr. Lowenstein has one of the busiest body contouring practices on the west coast. Having multiple modalities including both operative liposuction and non-operative CoolSculpting and Ultherapy, Dr. Lowenstein is uniquely able to recommend the optimal treatment for all of his body contouring patients.

What is VASER Liposuction?

VASER stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance.  While that may say it all if you are a biomechanical engineer, to the rest of the world some explanation is required. Ultrasound technology has been around for many years, and in some form this is used in so many medical applications.  The technology refers to vibration waves that have a frequency that is beyond the frequency that creates sounds that humans can hear.  OBGYN doctors use ultrasound machines to bounce these gentle waves off of unborn babies, and the machine that does so interprets those sound waves into a visual picture so the baby can be examined.  In more advanced medical uses, Ultherapy uses ultrasound to provide energy to the deep tissue in the face and create non-invasive tightening. (More on Ultherapy here.) Ultrasonic liposuction uses high frequency vibrations to disrupt and loosen fat cells from the important connective tissue around them, and VASER ultrasonic liposuction is the refinement of this technology to it’s safest and most precise form.  The VASER tool consists of a generator outside of the body attached to a long thin instrument that is inserted to the area of the body that we are working on.  In the case of VASER ultrasonic liposuction, the specialized VASER instruments are of different thicknesses and have different numbers of rings etched into their tip.  These rings cause the ultrasonic effects to be dispersed in different directions, with different energies, depending on the wishes of Dr. Lowenstein and the effect that he is trying to produce.

Easier, faster recovery.

Because of the more gentle and refined nature of VASER ultrasonic liposuction, recovery from your procedure can be expected to be less traumatic, faster, and accompanied by reduced pain and bruising. Remember that the ultrasonic energy is able to dislodge the fat cells without damaging the surrounding connective tissue and blood vessels. Less damage to the important adjacent structures means less trauma, less tissue to heal, and therefore easier recovery. The Santa Barbara lifestyle is what VASER liposuction does best- great, natural looking results with minimal down time and easy recovery.

What to expect during liposuction recovery.

  • You may shower or bathe on the day following surgery.
  • Expect to be back at work two to three days after surgery.
  • Driving is allowed when you feel comfortable doing so.
  • Normal activity is usually resumed as soon as you feel comfortable.
  • Return to working out after only two weeks.
  • Your final contour may take three to six months to achieve, though non-subtle, significant improvements in your contour are immediately seen after VASER liposuction.
  • Fading of small scars happens over the course of 3-12 months.

Who can benefit from VASER Liposuction?

How can skin tightening be performed with liposuction?

The VASER system alone is known to create optimal contour and shapes for body sculpting because of it’s unique ability to leave blood vessels and connective tissue undamaged.  Sometimes however, excessively loose skin is an additional problem that patients can present with.  Using the revolutionary J-Plasma ionized helium technology combined with VASER ultrasound, Dr. Lowenstein can achieve tighter skin overlying amazing new contours in a manner never before achievable.  Stunning results in the neck, arms, legs, and abdomen can now be created with these cutting edge technologies and in cases where invasive surgery was previously required, minimally invasive contouring and tightening can now be achieved with minimal downtime and maximal results.  More information on J-Plasma can be found here, but it is the combination of VASER and J-Plasma that creates truly remarkable results. In particular, Santa Barbara women who would previously need an abdominoplasty because of loose skin may now be able to avoid the large scar and extended recovery that comes with an open tummy tuck procedure.  To see if you are a candidate for optimizing your tummy without invasive surgery, call us at 805-969-9004 and schedule your consultation.

FAQs: Liposuction

  • How is Liposuction performed?

Liposuction is performed by first applying a special solution to the area of concern, which allows for access to the fatty tissue as well as reduction of bleeding and improved anesthesia. Very small incisions are then made to access the areas of fat. Special instruments, called cannulas, are then used to remove the fatty tissue with suction. Popular names for this procedure are liposculpture and liposelection. These are really just refined techniques of liposuction, which may include re-application of fat in other regions to augment certain areas.

  • Why should I choose to have VASER liposuction?

The addition of the ultrasonic high frequency vibrations is why. When delivered under the skin, these vibrations gently break down the fat cells. This dislodges the fat cells in the treated area, making them easier to remove. VASER liposuction, thanks to the ultrasound assist, is gentler than traditional liposuction where the cannula has to be moved back and forth to break loose the fat cells. Dr. Lowenstein feels that he has a great deal of control over the fat he removes to better sculpt the target areas. VASER liposuction delivers very smooth, contoured results.
  • What areas of the body can VASER liposuction target?

VASER liposuction is excellent for all of these areas of the body: abdomen, thighs, knees, love handles, chest, upper arms, chin, and the neck. Because of the precision it allows, Dr. Lowenstein can sculpt around certain muscles — in the abdomen, for instance — to enhance the patient’s results.
  • Does the fat come back?

Fat removal techniques such as liposuction, CoolSculpting, and abdominoplasty are permanent. Each of these techniques provides a new “reset point” for your body. In maintaining your healthy lifestyle, you can expect that removed fat will stay away following liposuction.

  • Is liposuction painful?

Liposuction is very well tolerated and not a very painful procedure. Patients may experience some burning and numbing sensations, but rarely complain of significant discomfort.

  • What are the risks involved with VASER liposuction?

Our patients love these procedures because, while they are invasive, they aren’t overly invasive. Still, liposuction of any form is surgery, so in entails the same risks involved with any surgery: excessive bleeding, infection, and reaction to the lidocaine used in the tumescent solution. These are all quite rare, especially thanks to Dr. Lowenstein’s double board-certified training, expertise, and experience. As for the ultrasound high frequency energy that is assisting the process, ultrasound has been used across the medical world for decades. It has no harmful effects on the human body. Complications specific to liposuction are: Contour irregularities — The treated area can appear bumpy or wavy. If the patient has inelastic skin, this is more prevalent. Numbness — Any numbness in the area is usually temporary, but it can endure. Fluid accumulation — Temporary pockets of fluid (called seromas) can form. These may need to be drained.
  • What is recovery like after liposuction?

Following liposuction in Santa Barbara, a compressive garment is worn to help ensure a well-contoured result. Recovery from this procedure is usually rapid and easy, with a short period of withholding from strenuous physical activity following your operation.

  • How long does it take to see the results after a VASER liposuction procedure?

Because there is less tissue trauma thanks to the addition of the ultrasound energy, there is less swelling and bruising after VASER liposuction. You’ll notice the changes immediately, although you will have some swelling. Plus, your skin needs to tighten down over the new slimmer contour. Dr. Lowenstein will have you wear compression garments for 4-6 weeks. This helps your skin tighten down and minimizes swelling and bruising. Your results will continue to get better and better as your body heals and adjusts. You should see your final results after from 3 to 6 months.
  • How long will my results from VASER liposuction last?

This is not a fleeting result. The fat removed by Dr. Lowenstein is gone for good. Our bodies typically only have a set amount of fat cells. These cells become larger with weight gain and smaller with weight loss. After this procedure you will have less fat cells., and your contour will remain slimmer and sculpted for good. Sure, you will have some slackening of your tissues; this is simply a part of aging. But as long as you don’t gain a good deal of weight, you’ll enjoy your results from VASER liposuction for the rest of your life. If you do put on a large amount of weight it is possible to create new fat cells. But most of our Montecito Plastic Surgery patients are so thrilled with their slimmer contours that they become dedicated to a healthier diet and regular exercise. That will keep your results looking great for the long haul.
  • What are different types of liposuction?

There are too many different types of liposuction to list here. Different surgeons promote different modalities- ultrasound, water jet, power assisted, and laser liposuction are a few of these types of liposuction that aid in marketing. While the results of all of these liposuction techniques are similar, they allow surgeons to market their practices and differentiate themselves from others.

  • How much does liposuction cost?

Liposuction in Santa Barbara is usually charged by the area treated- treatment of one or two areas is often done for a single low fee. When used as a refining technique or as an “add-on” to other procedures, however, the fee for liposuction is usually even lower. Please call the office at 805-969-9004 regarding specific costs, as our patient coordinator often runs liposuction specials.

  • How long does swelling persist following liposuction in Santa Barbara?

Swelling after liposuction happens because of two things- injection of the fluid used during the liposuction procedure, and normal swelling of the area that happens in most surgical procedures. While the contour of the area where liposuction is performed is most often markedly improved immediately after the procedure, the body will take a few days to completely absorb all of the operative fluid. As in a breast or face or other body procedure, normal swelling of the body after surgery can persist while gently improving for a few weeks following your liposuction operation.

  • How long after having VASER liposuction can I start to exercise again?

Because this process is less traumatic to tissues in the treatment areas, patients are able to return to their exercise routines more quickly. You can begin walking as soon as its comfortable, usually just a day or two. You can return to your regular exercise regimen as soon as two weeks. You’ll have to pace yourself and let how comfortable you are be the guide to how much you can do.
