Sweating is natural, but it can also become a nuisance if it happens too often. Sweat stains or “pitting out” through your shirt can make you feel embarrassed to raise your arms while body odor can cause you to feel self-conscious throughout the day.
Sweat should not dictate the way you feel on a daily basis or how you live your life. You should be free to take part in everyday activities and social outings without fear that you will sweat through your clothing.
As a way to combat your sweating, Dr. Lowenstein now offers miraDry — a nonsurgical treatment that targets the sweat glands and reduces your body’s ability to perspire through your underarms.
miraDry is ideal due to its minimally invasive nature. As a thermal energy procedure, the treatment destroys sweat and odor glands without harming surrounding tissues, yet the system is very efficient at eliminating excessive sweating.
You can receive treatment in Dr. Lowenstein’s Santa Barbara office, which usually takes just over an hour. The handheld applicator forms precisely to the curvature of your underarm and emits microwaves that pinpoint, heat and wipe out your sweat glands. With only one treatment, you will notice a permanent reduction in sweating as well as any odor that might accompany it. In patients with excessive sweating, called “hyper-hydrosis,” a second treatment may be performed.
miraDry is 100% safe and effective, with the laser energy targeting only the sweat glands in your underarms without any additional harm to surrounding the skin. Additionally, you don’t have to feel apprehensive about losing your sweat glands in this region, as they make up only two percent of the glands in your body.
Is miraDry right for me?
A consultation with Dr. Lowenstein will help you determine whether you would benefit from miraDry, though almost anyone is a candidate. If you are tired of sweating through your clothes, feel self-conscious about how much you sweat and aren’t seeing results from over-the-counter or prescription antiperspirants, then treatment with miraDry may be the right solution for you.
How does miraDry work?
miraDry is a noninvasive treatment that uses microwaves to break down and destroy sweat and odor glands. Through a handheld applicator, thermal energy penetrates the skin and destroys the sweat glands in your underarms, effectively reducing sweating.
What’s miraDry treatment like?
When you come in for your first session, you will lie down on a treatment table. To begin your miraDry procedure, you will receive a local anesthetic on your underarms to ease any discomfort during treatment. Afterward, the applicator will be applied to both underarms. One session usually takes about an hour to complete.
How many treatments will I need?
Typically, most patients will require only one treatments before receiving full results. There may be some instances where a patient needs a second treatment. miraDry treatments are spaced three months apart.
Is there any downtime?
You should experience minimal downtime after your miraDry treatment and can return to your normal routine right after your procedure. Some common side effects include tenderness and mild swelling, which should subside within a few days.
When will I see results?
Right after your first treatment with miraDry, you will notice a significant reduction in sweat- the effect is immediate!
Does miraDry treatment hurt?
With the application of a local anesthetic, you should not feel any discomfort during treatment, although you might experience some swelling and minor discomfort after the procedure is complete. Oral medications and ice packs can ease any discomfort you feel, and you should experience minimal down time.
How long does treatment last?
miraDry allows for the permanent destruction of sweat and odor glands in the underarm, which means that they are not capable of returning to your body. Once you have undergone treatments, you should experience a permanent reduction in sweat.
